Sonification and audification

Sonification techniques

Sonification is the process of converting abstract, non-auditory data into sound, enabling listeners to gain an auditory understanding of the data. It offers a sensory approach to exploring and understanding complex information through listening.

Various sonification techniques are used to transform data into sound: data series can be transposed into melodic scores, or associated with different instruments to play them. There are some 10 different approaches in this field.

The audification

For this project, I chose to work on audification: data are directly converted into sound waves.

I preferred this approach, firstly because of its originality: it has only rarely been used in projects involving the sonification of climatic data. Secondly, I liked the idea of being able to directly access a sound texture intimately linked to the readings and their movements.
